Emergency Closing Of Schools / Adverse Weather Conditions
The safety of students and staff is of prime concern.  A school may be closed whenever there is a possible safety hazard.  When bus transportation is cancelled, schools are closed.
  • A decision to cancel buses and close school is made by the Superintendent or Chairperson.  Closures are announced on the following radio stations:
    • CBC 990, CJOB 680, CFAM 950, CKMW 1570
  • School is closed and bus transportation is cancelled at -45°C.
  • When closed for low temperatures – staff are expected to attend.
  • Should adverse weather conditions arrive during the school day, schools will remain open.   Students will not be transported or sent home early.   Schools will be notified by 3:00 p.m. if buses will not operate.  Each school will have a billet plan in place and parents will be notified.  Parents may pick up their children.
  • If school is not cancelled, bus drivers have the discretionary responsibility not to drive a hazardous route and will notify parents.
Storm Billeting
Buses will not transport students home if severe weather conditions develop during the school day.  Therefore, it is imperative that each school have a billeting procedure that will be followed in such instances.  The storm closure-billeting procedure at MiamiSchool is as follows:
Each year, parents are asked to complete a billeting form that states who the school/student will contact if bus transportation is not available.  Please ensure that you have declared a billet for your children in advance, as school phone lines are extremely busy when the billeting process is necessary.  Trying to make plans during a cancellation may be difficult.
The Prairie Rose School Division office makes the decision to close schools.  Once the school is contacted with the decision not to run bus transportation the following procedure will be followed:
Staff will contact parents and billets.  Note:  Students are to remain in their classroom and are not allowed to leave the school until contact has been made with the parent and/or the billet.
If parents of bus students choose to come to the school to pick up their children, they must inform the school secretary.
Parents of town students, and billets are encouraged to come to the school to pick up their students.
In the case of a storm / school closure during a Grade 9 - 12 exam review or exam day, students will be notified of any rescheduling.
